UPTA Yours!

Starting small in 95, UPTA has grown beyond anyone's wildest expectations. I attended the very first, and was so disappointed I did not return for 5 yrs, after alot of prodding from comrads who assured me things were improving. Returning in the New Millenia, a new aura surrounded the event. Biz wise, things weren't really better pour moi, but the festival atmosphere had permeated and it became a tax write-off event to attend just for the fellowship. There were shows to see and mixers to mingle at, without the pervasive "academia" that has taken over SETC and similar combined auds. In fact, many producers have abandoned SETC in favor of UPTA on account of the academic bull that goes on for an entire week. read: We'll never make any money at our theatre, we just want to pass on our legacy to the "young people" by making them slave labor for awhile. gaaaaaah.
So after all these yrs of not a nibble, I've gotten the tiniest bit of interest growing.

Over 100 casting directors attended this yr. I targeted 3 companies, 2 of whom turned up their noses completely. But the 3rd expressed as much interest as an old girl could ever seriously hope for.

And the new hotel made ALL the difference. While some miscalculations were made, the hotel manager had daily meetings w/ the event organizer on how to fix probs. The restaurant was open additional hrs for us. Beer/wine bars were set up to take the strain off of the bartenders. Free coffee always in the lobby, free breakfast, and 2 free drinks per evening. The former hotel (which had housed UPTA 11 YEARS IN A ROW) had no lunch, would close the restaurant at 9 pm,(knowing full well dancers would show up starving at 11) and pretty much acted shocked EVERY YR when 1000 people would descend on the bar nightly. Good Riddence, old hotel. You took UPTA for granted at your own peril.

Purple Hip Replacements

I heard tell there was some footballin' going on last weekend, but that was all overshadowed by his Royal Rainness. Is it true that he had hip replacement? WTF? and the rumor being that the wear and tear was caused by his penchant for high heeled boots. Chillun, if high heels are the cause of hip replacement I'da had mine plasticized in my early 20s. At the dawn of the disco decade, my farrier hammered a pair of cigarette stilletos onto my cloven hooves and there they have remained.

But back to the point, how is it I have never seen The Little Man live? I've been a mega fan from the git-go. I have often put "Pink Cashmere" on repeat play for hrs at a time. I have buds who aren't even really INTO Prince that have seen him live many times. One reason might be my husband would rather have a pencil in his eye than accompany me to an event where I might squeal uncontrollably. Other favs I've never seen live: Earth Wind & Fire. U2. Aretha. Situation must be remedied.

At least hubby and I share a common love of Bull Riding as a spectator sport. We are getting our PBR tix tomorrow night for next weekends event.http://www.pbrnow.com/competition/ent/eventLoad.cfm?ID=07-531

I was once in a show where being in possession of rare tix to the Rodeo finals in Vegas counted as an "excused absense". but that's another blog for another day.

Walkin' in Memphis

heading over to the Land of the Delta Blues for the annual UPTAs - aka 3 Days of Solid Drinking. I haven't even picked out the material for my 90 secs yet. I HAVE, however, picked out my outfit and THAT is the important thing, n'est-ce pas? Telsey is supposed to be there for the first time ever. I should maybe do a little research (thanks, Geico Caveman) and see what they are casting. With the absense of Dave Clemmons this yr, I should focus my presentation on Telsey.

Instead of having one hotel for talent (hey, THEIR words, not mine) and a different hotel for producers/callbacks, everyone is in one big happy slumber party this yr. Should make for a very different atmosphere. Hard to imagine how the event could be even MORE fun and raucous than the past 10 yrs, but I gotta feeling that more bar space, and being able to take the elevator upstairs to crash is gonna be a BIG plus. Plus there will be even breakfast shmoozing opportunities that were unavailable w/ the enforced seperation of previous events. I'm on a starvation diet in preparation. I've lost 11 lbs.
